Northern Railways Launches Mechanised Cleaning System at New Delhi Station

Mechanised Cleaning System at New Delhi Railway Station

Celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Northern Railways has launched a mechanised cleaning system in New Delhi. This state-of-the-art mechanism will now be used for a comprehensive cleaning of all platforms, circulating areas, and foot-over bridges.

General Manager of Northern Railway, R K Kulshreshtha was quoted as saying, “The mechanised cleaning concept will raise the cleanliness standard of the station to an entirely new level and would be gradually introduced at major stations of Northern Railway within 6 months.”

Besides, a “Traffic Marshals” service has also been introduced to regulate the traffic in circulating areas of Ajmeri Gate and Pahar Ganj so as to avoid congestion.

The railway station has been divided into zones and sub-zones, whereby each will have accountability for supervision. A cleaning schedule will be stipulated for every sub-zone with detailed deployment of manpower and machinery.

Overall, 28 machines have been installed at the station which will be utilized to clean up different sections of the station. Replacing the brooms, battery powered vacuum cleaners operating at 6500 sq metres/hour will be used to clean the circulating areas and platforms.

Besides, a ride-on scrubbed carrying a mechanised scrubber and vacuum suction will be used to clean the granite and kota stones on the platforms. It will operate at a speed of 4800 sq metres/hour.

Other modern equipment include a single-disc scrubber for stain removal and high pressure jet cleaning machine for intensive washing through ultra high pressure jets. There is also going to be a battery operated cart for transporting garbage out of the station.

In the current situation when clean India campaigns under the Swachh Bharat Mission is already doing the rounds, this move by Northern Railways is yet another progressive step in building a clean India. This revolutionary cleaning system will soon replace the conventional cleaning system at the New Delhi railway station.
