Monsoon rains have caused stern flooding in various parts of the country, leading to the dislocation of thousands of people from their houses. Many people have lost their lives and access to food and water remains cut-off from long. Especially in the interior villages, road and telephone connectivity has taken a severe hit because of water log-in. In cities, rains caused severe troubles to people with traffic jams paralysing daily life.

The pervasive flooding in several states such as Assam, BiharHaryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Delhi has left thousands of people homeless over the past couple of days.

The flood conditions in Bihar and Assam especially are worsening. In Assam 19 lakh people have been hit by the devastating deluge due to the uninterrupted rainfall in several areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan. In many areas the condition has become a whole lot worse. 22 districts have been completely sub-merged as the Brahmaputra River continues to overflow.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has visited Assam to get an idea of how bad the situation is. He is making an Arial survey of some of the highly affected districts. He was accompanied by junior Home minister Kiren Rijiju and minister for development of the north east, Jitendra Singh. The army tweeted, saying, “Nine army columns deployed for floor relief in Assam & Bihar. 2000+ rescued. Brahmaputra breach being plugged.” And the government says, “The rains have been unprecedented this year. Over the last three months, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have received 5,957 mm rain.” Also, almost 80 per cent of the Kaziranga national park, home to the one-horned rhino, is submerged in water. “The situation has turned from bad to worse since Tuesday, and over a million people have been shifted to relief camps,” Assam’s water resources minister, Keshab Mahanta, told.

Along with Assam there are several other areas in the country that have been highly affected due to continuous rain. The disaster management department said, “NDRF and SDRF teams have been rushed to all flood-affected cities to carry out rescue and relief works.”
In Bihar road links to various villages have been cut off and people are using small boats to reach safely out of the submerged areas. “We are using makeshift boats to commute. Many people in our village have no ration for days. We have arranged food material to distribute to the affected families,” said Wasim of Asja village. He said many people have volunteered to help the needy.
