Salim, a Head Constable with the Delhi Police was lately captured in a video where he was seen struggling to stand straight in the metro he was travelling in. The video titled, ‘Drunk Delhi Police man on Delhi Metro- Funny’ got viral and broke the internet. The video was watched by more than 2 lakh people in two days and also made headlines in dailies. The issue was also picked for a debate on primetime TV.
Initially he was given the suspension order but later they were withdrawn as he was found clean. After he got a clean chit from the Delhi police, the offended Delhi Police head constable, Salim, then went straight to the Supreme Court and knocked for justice. He said, “This is the worst kind of defamation one can suffer through social media.”
Through inquiry and after verification of his medical records, it was found that the constable was in that state because of his disorientated and dizzy state which brought him health problems and partial paralysis. This was the reason why he lost his control in the metro and fell down on the floor.
Salim’s lawyer for the case, Mathews, said, “When the video went viral and Salim was suspended, it made front page news. When he was taken back, not a single newspaper or TV channel carried it. In the eyes of the general public, the petitioner was drunk in the metro and he is still under suspension.” He added, “Otherwise the only option for the petitioner was to live and suffer in silence as it is humanly impossible for him to locate the source of the video, or to take legal action against the thousands of print, visual and social media, particularly when the petitioner himself is half paralysed, with serious economic, health, emotional, and physical disabilities, who has to take care of his wife who had a serious heart attack after this incident along with the aged father of the petitioner who is paralysed for the last more than 5 years”.
On the other hand the wife of Salim got an heartattack after she went into depression soon after the video went viral.
The incident has surely taught one thing to all that social mediahas many remuneration but it could be a complete nightmare for some. Also, one must never judge the book with its cover. Only time will tell what next steps would be taken in this case. You may watch the entire video here:
