One of the most prolific figures in Indian politics, Sushma Swaraj’s sudden demise have left political leaders of India in shock. All of them are paying their tributes to the “Supermom” of India.
We will look to pay our tribute to this motherly figure by looking at her journey of becoming one of the most influential frames in Indian politics.
In her political career of over 40 years, she had many stints with the BJP party. She was the youngest cabinet minister of Haryana at the age of 25 years and also the very first woman CM of Delhi. On top of that, she also became the first minister to advocate ‘digital diplomacy.’
Sushma Swaraj was born on February 14, 1953, in Ambala Cantt, Haryana. She was brought up in a political atmosphere as her father was a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
She completed her graduation in political science and did an LLB course from Punjab University. Her journey with politics began when she became a part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s.
She married Swaraj Kaushal, a criminal lawyer and a senior advocate of the Supreme Court, in 1975.
In 1977, she made her entry in electoral politics as a member of the Janata Party and was elected to the Haryana Assembly. In 1984, she joined the BJP party and was appointed the secretary of the party.
She had to bear successive Lok Sabha defeats — in 1980, 1984, 1989. In 1990, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Six years later, she came back into the Lok Sabha.
She was the Information and Broadcasting minister from (September 2000–January 2003) and Health and Parliamentary Affairs minister from (January 2003–May 2004).
After the return of BJP at the centre after a period of 10 years, she was given the charge of the Foreign Ministry.
She performed this role to the best of her ability for 5 years and in the from the new set of cabinet ministers from 2019 elections hurrah, she was replaced by S. Jaishankar.
Sushma Swaraj was a leader who always worked for the unity and prosperity of her country. She was the face of Real integrated India and will not be forgotten any time soon.
