The samples of 177 milk brands have been tested. Out of these, results of 165 have arrived in which few are found to be ‘sub-standard.’ These milk tests are conducted by Delhi government in which twenty-one milk samples are not upto the mark including brands like Amul and Mother Dairy. It is said by Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain.
It is mentioned that these milk brands are not unsafe but they lack the prescribed level of components in milk. Like, if the fat content had to be 5 per cent, it was only 3 per cent. This means water was mixed. Jain also said that most of the sub-standard milk samples have found composition of milk powder. He further added that actions would be taken against them. In case of sub-standard milk, a penalty between Rs 5,000 and Rs 5 lakh can be imposed.
These tests were held from 13 April to 28 April. In this drive, ghee was tested. The drive would continue and extend to milk products like ‘paneer’ and ‘khoya’. To speed up the process of testing samples, 18 food inspectors have joined the Delhi government recently.
Sub-standard milk sample
Mother Dairy spokesperson said it had not received the test findings but insisted that that each batch of its milk underwent stringent quality tests at four levels to ensure that safe and quality milk became available for consumption.
Amul MD R S Sodhi said that In Amul, we maintain higher standards than that recommended by the FSSAI, so variation (substandard) is not possible. However while sampling or testing if proper care and process is not fully followed, such variation may occur. We shall await the detailed report and then can give a complete reply.
